The lecture will be in Woldenberg Art Center, room 210 (Stone Auditorium), on the Uptown Campus of Tulane University.

About the lecture
In ancient Rome, as in any pre-industrial society, building projects relied on the effort of human labor complimented by animal power and simple machines. The larger and heavier the building materials a construction project required, the more manpower that was needed to lug, haul, and lift that project to completion: seen in these terms, monumental architecture was one of the costliest enterprises in antiquity. How then did the construction of an impressive city such as Rome impact its urban population, which was no doubt involved in the building process? This paper seeks to understand the relationship between the process of construction and the social structures of Rome during the formative period of the Middle Republic (4th-2nd centuries BCE) when many urban aspects at Rome arose for the first time. In particular, I investigates the development of technology for heavy lifting—the most labor intensive components of Roman construction, and I present the results of fieldwork in Rome both tracking evidence for technological change and contextualizing that evidence in the social history of the period.
<img width='1' height='1' The work combined archive work with conventional topographic survey and geophysical prospection. The work has resulted in a completely new understanding of this major but neglected site which was the principal harbor of imperial Rome. The lecture will explore the methods used in the study of the sites, present the results of the work and discuss their implications for our understanding of Rome itself.

Georges Lecture

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; During this time, the Greek city-state took shape, and Greek sculpture, architecture, and vase-painting attained the characteristic forms that persisted in the Classical Period. This course will concentrate on the arts and material culture of Greece in the context of the social, political, and intellectual history of the Archaic period.

CLAS 381-01H (same as ARHS 391-01H) Art and Culture in the Roman Republic MWF 1-1:50 pm
Prof. Lusnia
The period of the Roman Republic, 509-44 BCE, saw a village on the banks of the Tiber grow to become a city of nearly one million inhabitants that ruled an empire stretching from the Atlantic coast of Spain to the eastern Mediterranean shores. This course tracks the art and material culture of Rome during the Republic in the light of cultural and political events of that time.

CLAS 381-02 (same as JWST 310) Jews and Christians in Antiquity MWF 3:00-3:50 PM
Prof. Lahey
The course will consider Jewish-Christian interaction for the first six centuries. Topics include disputation and polemic, laws and persecutions, and comparison of religious practices and Bible interpretation.

CLAS/JWST 314: The Epic Conflict of Saul and David TR 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
Prof. Marquis

The biblical characters of Saul and David have inspired many works of art in painting, music, and literature. Yet the biblical source of these is seldom appreciated for the epic work of literature that it is. Most readings have concentrated on either the character of Saul or of David. The course will concentrate on the dynamics of the conflict between these two major characters as the primary narrative arch of the books of Samuel. A close reading of the biblical text will highlight narrative strategies of repetition, variation, and gradation that help define and give meaning to an epic story cycle portraying the conflict between two major characters in the corpus of biblical literature.

Archaeological Institute of America, New Orleans Society

On Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 8 pm, the AIA New Orleans Society is sponsoring a lecture by Professor Nancy T. de Grummond. Therefore, for the 2005-06 academic year, there will be: a) no first year or second year reviews b) no third year reviews c) no promotion and tenure reviews d) no reviews for promotion to full professor e) no hearings of requests for reconsideration of last year’s unsuccessful third year reviews and/or promotion and tenure cases All faculty on the tenure track will have an extra year automatically added to their tenure clock. We ask that faculty seeking promotion to full professor wait for a more propitious time to seek promotion. For schools that have already convened their Promotion & Tenure committees or begun the review process for mid-year hires, please contact all involved as soon as possible. It is also important to contact external evaluators who may have already been asked for review letters, letting them know of this postponement. We will need their reviews next year. Please communicate this information to all your faculty, but especially to those coming up for either third-year review or promotion and tenure and those seeking reconsideration of negative decisions last year. This information should also be posted prominently in your websites.

Welcome to the Tulane Classical Studies Dept.
